The textbook definition of Memorial Day reads thusly: A federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. But for those who served and for those who’ve had loved ones fight for our country never to return, that definition is a bit too sanitized. It doesn’t convey the emotions and deeper meaning of the day. For them, it’s bittersweet watching people celebrate with picnics and parades knowing some of the most important people in their lives aren’t there for the festivities.

We’ve all heard a variation of the old saying ‘we fought so you wouldn’t have to.’ So on this Memorial Day, take a moment to ponder that. Then ask your mother, your father or siblings to tell you about friends and family who perished in service of our country or reflect on those you knew personally. Honor those by remembering them. That’s the deeper meaning of the day.

The team at NanoLumens wishes you a safe and happy Memorial Day.
