Digital Signage Federation recognizes the visual design and creative execution of the 220-foot LED installation, a collaboration among Nanolumens, Ford AV, Gentilhomme Studio, Smart Monkeys and others
Nanolumens, an industry-leading manufacturer and designer of cutting-edge LED displays and video wall solutions, announces the Oculus experiential curved LED display at George Bush Intercontinental Airport has won a Digital Signage Federation’s (DSF) Pixel Award. Recognized in the Pixel Perfect category for Best Visual Design and Creative Execution, the custom installation commissioned by Houston Airports and built using Nanolumens Nixel Series, was acknowledged as the work of an integrated team of project partners led by Ford AV.
The DSF Pixel Awards recognize the projects, people and innovations shaping the future of digital signage. The Pixel Perfect category honors outstanding visual design and creative storytelling that elevates the digital signage experience and captures audience attention. Judges scored entries on visual design excellence, creative concept, audience experience, brand alignment and execution quality, with the first two weighted most heavily. The Oculus brought together contributions across those areas with Houston Airports setting the vision for a display that introduces passengers to the city, Nanolumens engineering the display configuration and manufacturing the LED modules, Ford AV integrating and installing the system, Gentilhomme Studio developing the on-screen content and Smart Monkeys supplying the ISAAC workflow platform, among others.

As part of a transformation of Terminal E’s International Central Processor, Houston Airports set out to create a unique architectural digital signage feature that would introduce passengers to the city while operating reliably in a bright, high-traffic environment. Oculus is a 220-foot, rounded, continuous LED structure suspended at a 60-degree angle between the Arrivals and Departures levels. Visible from both floors and positioned directly above passenger circulation, it functions as both a media canvas and an architectural element.
The Oculus forms a truncated elliptical cone of smooth, connected arcs, with more than 2,000 Nixel Series LED modules custom-fabricated and positioned within millimeter tolerances. The Nixel Series delivers a resolution of 34,584 by 1,416 pixels, or nearly 49 million pixels, with pixel pitch ranging from 2.0 millimeters to 1.4 millimeters and brightness calibrated to 800 nits for the well-lit terminal.
